My barber has a friend with one of these, a black GT350 with white racing stripes. Anyway, it’s about to be my junior year (in high school). Any suggestions besides: don’t do drugs, don’t pick fights, and do the work? I walk to school because I live right next to my school, so I get to sleep later than most people (no car). It has been a great summer, Oppo, keep it cool! -Racin’Jason001

EDIT : I attend a Career and Tech program at my school, that being automotive.

You should be able to start choosing classes like auto shop, AutoCAD, FIRST robots (FUCK YEAH), and etc. Start thinking about what degrees you might want to pursue in college and what courses will help you with that. Alternatively, if you’re aren’t keen on getting a degree, chose courses that might help you gain experience toward a career/job or courses that might just be interesting to you.

If you have a car, do whatever you can to resist the urge of pulling a reverse-entry into the parking lot to pick up your buddies on the final day before winter break. The staff members will be very unhappy.

High school, shudder. Not much advice from me, I was not made for succeeding in HS. Lack of motivation, possibly ADD-related, limited my “performance” severely. And at this point in my life my HS scores are completely irrelevant, thank God.

My path to HS survival: pay attention in class, learn a lot on your own, and what shop-teacher said. Don’t have great expectations from romantic relationships; that was my biggest though probably unavoidable mistake.

If you want to continue into higher education, start planning for that now. This involves...

What is your preferred field of study?

What are the good schools for your field of study?

(Assuming you’re American) have your parents fill out a FAFSA. This will produce a number called the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). This is the number that will determine what financial aid you receive from the Feds and the university you attend. Determine it now so you aren’t surprised your senior year.

When do you take the PSAT? If you don’t know, ask your school. Study for this test. It determines various ranks of National Merit Scholar. The higher you rank, the more free money schools will give you.

Study for and take the SAT and ACT. These are very different tests, so study for them individually.

With your field of study, grades, test scores, and EFC, you can start to determine which schools have your major, will provide enough money for you to comfortably attend, and to which you can realistically earn admission.

Tough it out. College really isn’t anything to worry about either (if you plan on going), it is basically highschool 2.0. Work hard, make some money, buy a cheap 80s/90 sports car. I can recommend either a trans am or a 300zx z31. late 90s/early 2000s mustangs make a good first choice as well.

I think the most important thing to remember is that most of it isn’t important. Sure, do what you need to do to get to the next step of your life. That’s important, but those other things that seem so important? They aren’t. All of those people whose approval you want and who you so desperately want to fit in with? After next year you won’t see most of them ever again. Go forth, make memories, set up the next step, and realize for most people high school is a minor unpleasant blip in their lives.

Seriously - pick a few things outside of school you like to do and do them. Volunteer, join something, do work for the local city, something. Then pick a few things you haven’t done before but would like to and do those too.

Do the best that you can - higher grades look impressive on later job applications, and more importantly, on college/university applications. :)

Ditto on the AP/IB courses, the skills you learn and potential credits you earn can be very lucrative in Union/college.

Now is probably the easiest time to try and start getting your license...pester your parents! :D

College soph here with younger twin brothers going into their junior year of HS, too. If I have one piece of advice, do what you love balls deep while getting involved with a variety of extracurriculars. Not sure what your plans are for university, but I can’t emphasize enough how important extracurriculars and passion are on those applications.

Other than that, doing well on both the PSAT and SAT/ACT will open a lot of doors, especially in terms of scholarships. As far as general advice goes, try to have fun! College is great, but depending on your situation, these may be your last two substantive years of living at home and having a bit of a safety net; take advantage of them. Good luck, man!

This, so much this. I’ve finished 6 years now doing my undergrad and grad work in aerospace engineering. I got really lucky and just started a job making great money, finally. Part of me regrets never looking into other career paths.

Honestly, from a career perspective, if the resources are there learn to become a CNC machine operator. Typically it’s really cool work to do, there is a massive demand right now, and quite frankly it’s easier to do and easier to get a job in then engineering. I live around Detroit now, and there are literally dozens of places looking for experienced CNC machinists/fabricators/programmers.

If you do the undergrad/grad route, AP classes are, like daender said, the shit. I regret not trying to take more. I taught a class last year where some kids came into college with over 50 credits from HS. For perspective, I was considered ‘advanced’ when I left HS with 7 :\

Because I’m fye, I can do worse than I normally do and still keep Zell. This is only for public colleges, though.

lol, I got a month till my freshman year of college.... what grate you going in, junior or senior?

I got advice for both...

Junior:
-take your ACT/SAT this year. I didn’t, and it was scary since I only had one shot... still goo an 1820/2400 though! also, tip on this: don’t answer questions you don’t know. you lose points if you get it wrong but you don’t gain points if you leave it blank. net zero beats net negative!
-have some fun: people say junior year is the hardest, but it really isn’t... now that most of your friends can drive, find out who drives what in your grade, and if there’s car people, now’s the time to make friends! my school’s got quite a few car guys, and we’ve already built up a group! :)
-AP/Honors/IB: It’s a mixed bag but trust me, don’t take more than 2 a year. I took 4 as a sophomore, and wanted to commit seppuku. 1-2 honors/ap’s are ok.
-your GPA matters only so much. start thinking about college essays hella early and look at the topics for the colleges you wanna attend. earlier you start, the better!

Senior:
-don’t get arrested
-don’t get shot
-always have someone else drive your booze where you need it to go
-graduate
-know how much you can drink/smoke before you go nuts
-see all of the above, but still party!

Good luck man!

It’s been quite a while since I’ve been in high school (let’s just call it 10 years), but I’m sure some of the same things still apply. The main thing is STUDY FOR TESTS! I was a major slacker in high school and never studied. Spent too much time with friends / girlfriend / doing stupid shit with my car. I ended up barely scraping by and had my graduation balancing on whether or not I passed my prob/stats exam. Having studied more would have meant better grades, which (hopefully) would have meant scholarships and direct acceptance to a four-year university instead of me going to the local community college for a couple years before transferring to the school I originally wanted to attend. School really isn’t that hard as long as you put in a little effort. I didn’t learn that until it was almost too late though. I’m hoping my kids don’t make that same mistake.
